USC custom-shaped electrodes could improve future BCIs

USC described a method for customizing implanted electrodes to reach the shapes and depths of particular neural targets. For BCIs, closer alignment between sensor geometry and active neural circuits could mean better recordings with fewer missed signals.

The project is a research-stage neural-interface technology. It does not yet establish stronger decoding in a real-world BCI, and any medical use would require substantial validation of safety, stability and performance.
