USC develops customizable brain-recording implants
University of Southern California researchers described neural implants that can be customized to match the shape and depth of particular brain regions. Standard electrode arrays can miss activity outside their immediate recording area or sit awkwardly against complex anatomy.
The approach aims to improve signal coverage for studying functions such as movement and memory. It is an engineering research result, not a clinically validated consumer implant or evidence of generalized mind reading.
