Anthropic names its first global affairs chief

Anthropic named Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, known as Tino, as its first chief global affairs officer, reporting to president Daniela Amodei. Cuéllar, a former justice of the California Supreme Court, will lead the company's policy work, strategic international engagement and relationships with governments worldwide.

Cuéllar is taking a leave of absence from Stanford Law School, where he teaches and holds a senior fellowship at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. He recently stepped down as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Washington-based foreign policy think tank, and earlier served as a special assistant in the Obama White House and on California's highest court.

The appointment gives Anthropic a dedicated diplomatic function for the first time, signalling how central regulatory relationships with governments have become to a frontier AI lab's operations.
