Brazil pledges $444 million for AI supercomputers

Brazil's government said on 20 August it would invest 2.3 billion reais, about $444.2 million, to expand the country's artificial intelligence infrastructure, splitting the money between two supercomputing projects. Just over half, 1.3 billion reais, will fund a machine built in Rio de Janeiro with China's Huawei Technologies and iFlytek, intended mainly for training large language models for government and sector-specific use. The remaining roughly 1 billion reais will go toward a tender for a second supercomputer that officials expect to rank among the world's ten most powerful AI systems, with Nvidia seen as the likely winner.

Officials framed the split as deliberate, pairing a Chinese-built machine with an expected Nvidia-based one so the country does not depend on a single supplier, technology or government for its computing base.

Splitting a national AI budget between rival suppliers hedges against export controls and pricing leverage that a single-vendor deal cannot, at the cost of running two separate hardware stacks side by side.
