OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens with new safety tools

OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated version of the chatbot built for users aged 13 to 17. Any account the system estimates or that self-reports an age in that range is routed into a restricted experience, with tighter limits around topics such as suicide, self-harm and romantic or sexual conversations.

The teen version adds a Study Mode that walks users through problems step by step rather than supplying direct answers, alongside homework reminders that redirect toward Study Mode when the system detects signs of likely cheating. Parents can enable Study Mode by default, review usage patterns and set other account-level restrictions through a linked account.

Age-estimation systems must work reliably before parental controls or content limits mean much, so how OpenAI enforces that boundary will matter as much as the restrictions themselves.
