Fields medallists question AI mathematics incentives
Twenty-five Fields medallists signed a statement warning that the use of AI in mathematics was being driven by incentives poorly aligned with the discipline. Published by Terence Tao, it argues that producing proofs is only part of mathematics; conceptual understanding and the transmission of ideas also matter.
The signatories criticised rushed announcements that lack complete write-ups, clear attribution or an adequate account of the methods used. They also raised concerns about the effects on students and the human practices through which mathematical knowledge is developed and shared.
The statement calls for urgent attention to these issues as AI systems become more capable. Its concern extends beyond whether a particular output is correct to whether other mathematicians can understand and build on it.
A claimed solution becomes useful mathematical knowledge through scrutiny, explanation and connection to existing work. Faster generation does not remove that process.
