Mistral unveils Large 4 ahead of open release

Mistral unveiled Mistral Large 4, its new flagship model and first major model announcement in about five months. The company says Large 4 improves its position among open-weight systems across coding, finance, cybersecurity, geospatial analysis and industrial design. For now it is available through a monitored interface rather than as downloadable weights.

Public weights are planned for 27 October, after a period of safety testing. Mistral is also giving selected cybersecurity experts and government authorities access to a less restricted version so they can probe the model's offensive and defensive capabilities before the broader release.

The staged launch separates model access from model ownership: users can test Large 4 now, while local deployment remains gated until the weights are released. That gives Mistral time to test safety controls without abandoning its open-weight positioning.
