OpenAI reaches 1 billion active users

OpenAI said its models now reach more than one billion active users and over two million businesses, a milestone the company had aimed for earlier in the year after passing 900 million weekly active users in February. Intensifying competition from rival labs pushed the target back by several months.

The disclosure followed a repricing of OpenAI's GPT-5.6 family the previous day: the Luna tier dropped 80 percent, to 20 cents per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens, while the Terra tier fell 20 percent, to $2 and $12 per million tokens respectively. OpenAI attributed the cuts to efficiency gains in the models and the infrastructure running them.

ChatGPT launched less than four years ago, so a billion active users this quickly, even behind OpenAI's own schedule, still marks one of the fastest adoption curves in consumer software.
