Solana begins phased slot-time cuts under Agave 4.2
Solana client developer Anza began rolling out mainnet feature activations for Agave 4.2 the week of 17 August, the first step in a phased rollout defined by SIMD-0525. The proposal cuts Solana's slot time from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds in a series of 50-millisecond decrements, with each successive cut gated behind a feature-activation vote and paused automatically if block-skip rates rise too high. Agave 4.2 also raises the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes and cuts on-chain rent costs by roughly 90 percent.
The release additionally ships the full code for Alpenglow, Solana's rearchitected consensus mechanism, ahead of its planned activation in Agave 4.3, alongside a bug bounty for the new consensus code.
Bundling rent reduction with faster slot times addresses two separate complaints from Solana developers at once: the cost of holding state on-chain, and the network's latency relative to centralised alternatives.
