Solana begins testnet slot-time cuts toward 200ms

Solana's testnet slot time dropped from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, the first of four planned steps toward an eventual 200 milliseconds under proposal SIMD-0525. Each reduction activates through its own feature gate and only proceeds if network stability, measured by block skip rates, stays within acceptable bounds.

The remaining cuts move in 50-millisecond increments, to 300, then 250, then 200 milliseconds, each gated and tested separately. Assuming testnet performance holds up through the sequence, the corresponding mainnet release, Agave v4.2, is scheduled to ship on August 17.

A network that finalises blocks in under 200 milliseconds narrows the practical gap between on-chain settlement and the response times users expect from centralised exchanges, without any change to Solana's existing fee or validator model.
