S&P Global launches risk framework for DeFi lending vaults
S&P Global Ratings launched a new Vault Risk Assessment framework for lending vaults that pool digital assets and deploy them into onchain credit strategies. The ratings firm says deposits in these structures reached about $10 billion in September, up from $1.5 billion two years earlier.
The framework evaluates six areas: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance. S&P describes the resulting assessment as a forward-looking opinion on the relative risk that an investor's position could be impaired. It is not a credit rating and does not evaluate the yield a vault offers.
The launch extends institutional risk analysis deeper into DeFi. S&P has previously introduced stablecoin stability assessments and rated a DeFi protocol, while the new framework targets a category where smart-contract transparency alone says little about strategy, governance or operational risk.
