Neuropathy study separates symptom relief from functional gains
A study in October's Pain and Therapy issue examines patients completing a course of NeuroGen neuromodulation for peripheral neuropathy. The authors report improvements in tingling, numbness and pain, with smaller improvements in functional measures.
More than half of patients reached the study's threshold for meaningful sensory relief, while functional gains were reported in roughly a quarter to a third. Residual limitations remained common.
The analysis reviews treated patients' records rather than a randomized comparison. It can describe observed change, but cannot by itself isolate the treatment's effect from selection, expectation or other care received during the same period.
