Researchers explore optogenetic vision restoration
Research discussed in the New England Journal of Medicine examines efforts to restore vision using optogenetics, which introduces light sensitivity into surviving retinal cells. Unlike a brain implant, the approach aims to exploit existing visual pathways using modified cellular responses.
Such work is promising for severe retinal degeneration, but early clinical results are not a broad treatment approval. Durability, practical visual function and the need for specialized stimulation hardware remain important unresolved questions.
