Science Corp reports 36-month PRIMA trial results

Science Corporation reported three-year follow-up results from the PRIMAvera trial of its PRIMA retinal implant for people with geographic atrophy caused by age-related macular degeneration. The pivotal study originally implanted 38 patients across 17 sites in five European countries.

At 36 months, 27 participants were evaluable for safety and 18 for efficacy. Science said the efficacy group improved by an average of 29 ETDRS letters, nearly six chart lines, compared with a 24.5-letter mean improvement at 12 months. Fourteen of the 18 evaluable patients improved by at least 15 letters. The company also reported no new safety signal between months 12 and 36.

PRIMA is a subretinal photovoltaic implant paired with specialised glasses that project light onto the device. The follow-up is notable for durability, but the efficacy result comes from a small subset of the original trial population and should be read in that context.
