A photonic reservoir uses binary modulation for multimedia tasks

A Scientific Reports paper published on October 1 presents deep binarized photonic reservoir computing. Its architecture combines rapid binary modulation from a digital micromirror device with scattering in a random medium, photodetection and time-multiplexed processing.

A reservoir uses a physical system's response to transform an input into features that a trained readout can use. That can make complicated optical dynamics useful without controlling every internal interaction individually.

The complete system includes electronic components and readout constraints. Its practical throughput and energy cost therefore need to be judged across the full processing chain, rather than from the propagation speed of light alone.
