FLARE combines photonic processing with short- and long-term memory
An August Nature Sensors paper introduces FLARE, an architecture combining photonic and electronic mechanisms for processing, sensing and memory. The researchers report a monolithic chip with 7,378 neurons and a multilayer system assembled from ten cores.
The design supports persistent state alongside fast dynamics, and the paper demonstrates navigation-related sensing and adaptation. Its aim is to reduce reliance on separate digital memory for inputs and intermediate activations.
The reported efficiency belongs to the demonstrated system and its accounting assumptions. It should not be treated as a universal energy figure for arbitrary AI models or as evidence of permanent, nonvolatile optical storage.
