Photonic circuits learn directly from measured optical gradients
A research briefing published in Nature Computational Science describes an in-situ learning method for photonic integrated circuits. Instead of first building a comprehensive software model of all optical components, the technique directly measures gradients in the physical circuit and uses those measurements to tune its behavior.
The method supports multiple circuit topologies and demonstrations involving matrix design, multiwavelength computation and rapid adaptation. Training directly on hardware could help account for fabrication differences and other optical imperfections that are difficult to simulate accurately.
The work is a laboratory advance toward programmable photonic accelerators, not a complete replacement for electronic machine-learning systems. Memory, nonlinear operations, conversion overhead and software integration remain open engineering challenges.
