Moonshot releases Kimi K3's open weights

Moonshot AI published open weights for its Kimi K3 model, a mixture-of-experts system with 2.8 trillion parameters and a one-million-token context window. The download totals roughly 1.4 terabytes at four-bit MXFP4 precision, the format Moonshot chose to keep self-hosting feasible.

The weights are released under a modified MIT licence rather than the standard MIT terms Moonshot's earlier models used. Commercial use, embedding the model in a product and running it for internal research all remain free and unrestricted for the large majority of users; the licence's added conditions are aimed at large-scale hosting providers that resell access to the model rather than at developers.

At 2.8 trillion parameters, Kimi K3 is the largest open-weight language model made publicly downloadable to date.

The model is large enough that self-hosting suits only organisations with substantial GPU capacity, shifting the near-term effect onto the hosted inference market rather than onto self-hosting itself.
