OpenAI begins rolling out GPT-6 Astra
OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra, beginning with a limited set of organisations before expanding access over the following days. The planned rollout covers ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, alongside the API, Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock.
The model is designed to carry out extended tasks across browsers, desktop software and codebases. OpenAI reported stronger computer-use performance and shorter completion times in its own evaluations, while also updating the Codex harness. Those results measure specified test environments rather than every application a user might encounter.
The launch version supports defensive security work including code review and patching, but restricts more advanced tasks such as developing proof-of-concept exploits. Broader specialist access is planned through OpenAI Daybreak.
The release makes the surrounding controls part of the product: which tasks an agent can complete depends on its tools and access conditions as well as the model.
