OpenAI backs an AI programme for Ukrainian newsrooms

OpenAI, WAN-IFRA and the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine announced a programme to support AI adoption in Ukrainian newsrooms. Ten news organisations will receive hands-on assistance and API credits as part of an initiative covering newsroom projects and business transformation.

The programme combines training with work on specific publishing needs, aiming to help organisations develop practical uses of the technology. A masterclass began on 5 August, while a further accelerator was scheduled to start on 17 September. The announcement therefore brings together work already underway and a later phase still to begin.

The partnership places AI tools inside existing news organisations, where editors retain responsibility for what is published and how readers are served.

Access to a model is only one part of adoption. Smaller publishers also need the time and expertise to fit it into their daily operations.
