Ethereum researchers set a 2029 quantum-resistance target
The Ethereum Foundation's protocol team set December 2029 as its target for quantum resistance across Ethereum's execution, consensus and data layers. The team said the deadline would remain fixed at least until a reassessment with outside experts in January 2027.
The roadmap includes a minimum viable post-quantum contingency intended to keep the network operating with reduced guarantees. Researchers are still defining those guarantees, while full resistance remains the objective. Delivering the work requires overlapping research, specifications and implementation across several upgrades.
For Hegotá, the immediate focus is safely combining fork-choice enforced inclusion lists with frame transactions. The latter make account validation programmable and provide a route towards replacing existing signature schemes.
The deadline is a planning commitment, not a prediction of when quantum computers will break current cryptography. It turns a long-term risk into constraints on the upgrades being scoped now.
