ECB explains the limited scope of its digital euro pilot

The ECB's digital euro pilot guidance, updated on October 22, describes a limited exercise involving selected payment providers, merchants and Eurosystem staff. The purpose is to test technical operation and everyday payment experiences.

The pilot uses a beta payment instrument. Preparing it does not mean the ECB has decided to issue the digital euro, and it is not an invitation for the public to invest in a new asset.

That distinction separates operational preparation from the legislative and policy decision still required. Testing a payment system can provide useful evidence without committing the institution to a general launch.
