Psychiatry's neuromodulation issue puts adaptive control on the agenda
The American Psychiatric Association's October journal announcement brings together work on precision therapeutics and neuromodulation. Topics include AI for adaptive closed-loop systems, temporal interference stimulation and individualized targeting.
The common question is how to make stimulation responsive to the person and the state being treated, rather than rely entirely on a fixed schedule and a broad diagnostic category.
An issue theme is a research agenda, not proof that these methods are equally mature. Reviews, commentary and randomized trials serve different purposes. Claims about benefit need to be tied to the actual study and endpoint rather than the promise of adaptive control in general.
