Jülich demonstrates fast, accurate single-qubit gates

Forschungszentrum Jülich reported a gate-control experiment on October 23. Researchers performed single-qubit operations lasting 6.8 nanoseconds, with measured accuracies above 99.98% on an isolated superconducting transmon.

The method shapes microwave pulses to suppress unwanted multiphoton transitions into higher energy levels. Those transitions become more troublesome when short, strong pulses push a qubit outside its intended computational states.

Faster operations could leave room for more work before coherence is lost. The result still needs testing in larger processors and during two-qubit operations, where neighboring devices and interactions create additional constraints.
